TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Former Vice Premier Cheng Wen-tsan (鄭文燦) was released on bail of NT$28 million (US$877,380) Wednesday (Aug. 28) after prosecutors charged him with corruption the day before.
Cheng, who is also the former mayor of Taoyuan, was released from Taoyuan District Court at around 5 a.m., per CNA. Cheng was charged alongside 10 others, who were released on bail at amounts ranging between NT$250,000 and NT$2.05 million.
Cheng has also been restricted to his residence and prevented from leaving the country as part of the conditions of his release.
Prosecutors said on Tuesday (Aug. 27) they are seeking a 12-year prison sentence for Cheng, and expressed confidence they have the evidence needed for a conviction.
They said the recommendation is based on the NT$5 million (US$156,580) worth of bribes he is accused of having taken while he was Taoyuan mayor, as well as his denial of the crimes.
