TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) thanked the military for defending the country and safeguarding its sovereignty on Armed Forces Day on Tuesday (Sept. 3).
In a Facebook post, Lai noted that Tuesday marks the 93rd Armed Forces Day and called on citizens to thank “our brothers and sisters of our military for safeguarding national security and defending our sovereignty.” Lai emphasized that democracy and freedom are Taiwan's “unwavering commitments, peace is the only option, and prosperity is the goal of long-term stability.”
The president said that whether it is defending Taiwan's maritime territories, airspace, or homeland, the military is fulfilling its duties on the front lines, faithfully completing one challenging mission after another. Lai said the military is vital for safeguarding the country, people's lives, and property.
Lai said that next year’s national defense budget will increase. In addition to strengthening asymmetric warfare capabilities, Lai said the military would receive better training, equipment, and care, becoming a leaner and more modern fighting force.
The president stressed the need to show the world the unity and resolve of Taiwan’s military and civilians in defending the country. He thanked every military family member for their warm support and understanding, “enabling our armed forces to fully commit to defending our homeland without worries.”
In an X post uploaded Tuesday, Lai saluted “the heroes protecting our democracy and sovereignty.” The president said his administration is demonstrating its commitment to the armed forces by boosting the defense budget and providing better equipment and training.
Taiwan's defense budget will reach an all-time high of NT$647 billion (US$20.25 billion) next year. The defense budget includes NT$476 billion for the Ministry of National Defense's regular budget, NT$90.4 billion to purchase new fighter jets and enhance sea-air combat capabilities, and NT$80.6 billion for a non-profit special government fund, an increase of NT$46.4 billion, or about 7.7%, compared to 2024.
