TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – The government will continue to introduce measures to attract foreign investment, hoping that the phrase “Branded in Taiwan” will gain as much international fame as “Made in Taiwan,” Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim (蕭美琴) said Tuesday (Sept. 3).
In a meeting with winners of the 20th Golden Root Awards for highly competitive companies rooted in Taiwan, Hsiao emphasized the government’s efforts to improve international trade relations, per Radio Taiwan International. She said that if Taiwan wants to link up with the world, some businesses need government assistance.
Hsiao mentioned the first phase of the U.S.-Taiwan Initiative on 21st-Century Trade as a success, with a second and a third phase coming up. She said talks with the US about a double taxation avoidance agreement would also give companies a more equitable business environment.
Hsiao said that similar accords were in the works with Southeast Asia, Canada, and the United Kingdom. Just like the winners of the Golden Root Awards, more businesses will be able to keep their roots in Taiwan while expanding operations globally.
Taiwan itself should become a trustworthy and reliable international brand, opening opportunities to develop a global dimension for the next generation of businesses, she said.
