TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan is seeking deeper cooperation with the US and other like-minded partners, Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Secretary-General Lin Yu-chang (林右昌) said during a visit to the Global Taiwan Institute (GTI) in Washington DC on Tuesday (Sept. 3).
Lin said at a GTI talk that Taiwan is focused on expanding cooperation on new issues with the US and that its international space still requires the support of the US and other democratic allies.
During his 13-day trip to the US, Lin said he would discuss Taiwan’s situation and the government’s position on critical issues. He said his aim was to ensure the US and the international community have a clear understanding of Taiwan's stance on domestic and global challenges.
Commenting on the DPP's loss of its majority position in the Legislative Yuan, Lin explained that after eight years in power, some citizens may have become dissatisfied with certain governance issues.
Another factor was the emergence of the Taiwan People's Party, which created a new political environment and impacted the distribution of votes. However, he noted the DPP lost by only a small margin.
He pointed out that in a democratic society, elections result both victories and defeats, and no party can govern forever. The DPP views the election results with a healthy mindset, Lin said, adding that the party must demonstrate stronger governance capabilities to win back public support.
Lin will next visit Houston, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. His visit aims to strengthen the DPP’s outreach to overseas Taiwanese.
