TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A 10-year-old girl who was injured in a February car accident in Changhua died on Thursday (Sept. 5).
The girl died from a neurological failure just before 7 a.m. after 197 days in care at the Changhua Show Chwan Memorial Hospital, per CNA. She died after being hit by a car on a zebra crossing in an accident that also injured her two siblings.
The girl’s injured sister is similar in age and remains in a coma in the care of Han Ming Christian Hospital, also in Changhua. Her condition reportedly improved and then deteriorated again, and she is currently on life support.
The third sibling injured, a boy in the first grade of elementary school, escaped with minor injuries. At the time of the accident, Changhua County Magistrate Wang Huei-mei (王惠美) said the children were of a low-income family, and that the county government would offer support.
The driver of the vehicle that struck the siblings was reportedly unlicensed. Police said he had caused another accident before the February incident but continued to drive.
According to transport ministry data, there has been one additional traffic accident at the same intersection where the siblings were hit between January and May this year. In the same period, 1,193 people died in traffic accidents on Taiwan’s roads, 521 of whom died in incidents occurring at intersections.
