TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A delegation of US legislators led by Kentucky Senator Robert Stivers met with Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chi-mai (陳其邁) on Wednesday (Sept. 4).
The delegation includes 10 senators and representatives from six southeastern states: Kentucky, Georgia, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Alabama.
Stivers said Taiwan and the US have always been friendly partners and stressed that Taiwan's peace and stability are crucial to maintaining regional peace, according to Kaohsiung City Government. He looked forward to strengthening cultural and educational exchanges between the southeastern US and Kaohsiung to facilitate better understanding and interactions.
Alabama Senator Linda Coleman-Madison said education and culture are important foundations for exchanges. After returning to the US, Coleman-Madison said she plans to meet with Taiwanese students studying in her state and explore collaboration possibilities with universities in Kaohsiung.
Chen thanked the US for its unwavering support of Taiwan's democracy and emphasized the close interactions between Kaohsiung and various American sectors, particularly education. Establishing sister schools and enhancing student interaction could further deepen Taiwan-US relations, Chen said.
Chen said Kaohsiung is one of the world's most important hubs for advanced semiconductors, attracting international companies to invest and set up factories. US company AMD is also establishing a research and development center in the Asia New Bay Area, pointed out.
The mayor hoped the delegation could learn more about Kaohsiung's investment environment during the visit and facilitate more opportunities for cooperation.
