TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Video surfaced on Thursday (Sept. 5) showing a police officer firing 12 shots at a drunk driver near a Costco in Taichung and motorists using their vehicles to prevent him from escaping.
At around 5 p.m. the officer from Song-an Police Station was patrolling on a scooter near Taichung's Beitun District when he spotted a sedan driven by a 45-year-old man surnamed Cheng (鄭) swerving erratically, per UDN. The officer turned on his siren and directed Cheng to pull over, but he refused.
When they reached the intersection of Dunfu Road and Dunfu 6th Street, Cheng was blocked by traffic. As the officer walked toward the driver's side of the car, Cheng suddenly went into reverse and ran over the officer's scooter.
The officer fired 12 shots at Cheng's car tires as he attempted to flee in the wrong direction. However, two motorists, one driving a van and the other a delivery truck deliberately blocked Cheng’s path.
The van rammed Cheng's car into a road median, enabling the officer to smash Cheng's window with a baton. The officer then arrested Cheng and took him to the station for questioning.
After undergoing a breathalyzer test, Cheng's blood alcohol level was found to be 0.70 mg/L, well above the legal limit. Police found that Cheng had a prior record of drunk driving.
Cheng was transferred to the District Prosecutor's Office to be investigated for offenses against public safety (公共危險罪) and public obstruction (妨害公務罪), per SET News. The incident is still under investigation.
