TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A group of Taiwan People's Party (TPP) supporters held a silent protest Friday (Sept. 6) outside Taipei Detention Center to show support for the party's former Chair Ko Wen-je (柯文哲) after he was detained on suspicion of corruption.
The protest organized by supporters called “Little Sprouts” saw a crowd gather by 8 p.m. of over 100 silent protestors holding green glow sticks. Ko's sister, Ko Mei-lan (柯美蘭), also attended the event, per CNA.
Ko is accused of corruption in connection with the Pacific Core City development project. He was denied bail Thursday (Sept. 5) by Taipei District Court.
TPP Development Department Deputy Chair Lin Chao-yin (林昭印) arrived at the protest and expressed concern for the safety of everyone involved. He also contacted the police to prevent any potential conflict.
Lin expressed his gratitude to the police for their assistance. He also thanked supporters for their silent gathering.
Ko's sister attended the protest but declined to comment on media reports claiming that Ko received a bribe of NT$15 million (US$468,153). She also remained silent when asked about Ko's innocence.
