TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwanese professional basketball player Chou Yi-hsiang (周儀翔) has resigned from the Taoyuan Pauian Archiland team after receiving a fine for drinking and driving.
Police reported that they issued the P. League+ player a NT$180,000 (US$5,602) fine on Monday (Sept. 9) for refusing a breath alcohol test when stopped by officers in August, per CNA. Also on Monday, Chou’s team announced that he had resigned with immediate effect.
Taoyuan Pauian Archiland stated that Chou had failed to meet the standards expected of its players and that his contract would be terminated. The team added that it would take steps to prevent similar incidents from happening in the future.
Chou was reportedly stopped in Taipei’s Daan District by police who observed him using his cell phone while driving. When stopped, officers smelled alcohol and requested a breath test, which Chou refused.
Police said they immediately confiscated Chou’s vehicle after he refused to cooperate and noted that his driver’s license would be suspended in addition to the fine.
