TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A commemoration was held Saturday (Sept. 7) at the 1878 Cepo' Battle site in Hualien to honor the 165 Indigenous Amis people who died resisting China’s Qing dynasty forces.
Eight related clans gathered to pay tribute to their ancestors. The event aimed to educate younger generations about this significant chapter in their history, per CNA.
Taiwan's Indigenous people have faced displacement and persecution at the hands of foreign powers throughout the nation's history, Fengbin Township Mayor Chiu Fu-shun (邱福順) said. He emphasized that these stories are frequently overlooked.
Chiu hoped future generations would recognize the significance of the Cepo' Battle and cherish their homeland. The township looks to foster a stronger sense of belonging and togetherness among the Amis people.
The conflict between the Amis people of the Cepo' village and Qing authorities was originally known as the “Dagangkou Incident.” It was renamed the “Cepo’ Incident” in 2022.
