TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — US singer Bruno Mars angered Taiwanese fans after he thanked “Taiwan, China” in a Weibo post and one of his social media posts was changed.
The “Bruno Mars Live in Kaohsiung” concert held at Kaohsiung National Stadium on Sept. 7-8 drew 157,000 fans. However, on Wednesday (Sept. 11), Mars posted a 43-second clip of the concert on Weibo and wrote in simplified Chinese characters: “Thank you, Taiwan, China (love symbol),” per Liberty Times.
Initially, some netizens came to his defense suggesting the post was designed for Chinese internet users. However, one of his social media posts was changed on Wednesday (Sept. 11). His Instagram post originally included Taiwan’s national flag and read, "Thank You Taiwan," but on Thursday (Sept. 12) it read, "Thank You Kaohsiung," with the flag missing.
On Thursday, Kaohsiung City Councilor Chang Po-Yang (張博洋) took to Facebook to say Mars sang, "Baby, I miss you so much" in Chinese last week at Kaohsiung National Stadium and the fans went wild. “Now we know who the baby is, the baby must be renminbi. No wonder he sang in Chinese,” said Chang.
Chang said from actress Ariel Lin's (林依晨) claim of being a Chengdu person to Mars' latest social media posts, “the Chinese Communist Party will stop at nothing to turn the whole world into their people, but such heavy-handed tactics will only make everyone hate Chinese people even more!”
“I’ve lived this long and only now realized that even Mars is an inalienable territory of China,” quipped Chang.
