TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Tainan Mayor Huang Wei-che (黃偉哲) was involved in a traffic accident while riding in his official vehicle on National Freeway 1 on Thursday (Sept. 12) evening.
Tainan City Government told CNA that Huang’s car was involved in an accident on the highway in Houbi District at around 9 p.m. Huang and others in the vehicle were unharmed in the crash.
Huang’s car was traveling at 110 kilometers per hour when a 100-kilogram metal box fell off another vehicle traveling in front of it, the city government said. Huang’s driver was unable to avoid the box and hit it, damaging the front of the car.
Speaking to reporters on Friday (Sept. 13), Huang said the crash was frightening, and invoked the Buddha Amitabha. He said that while the car was damaged, it was fortunate that it did not overturn.
According to highway police, two other vehicles were damaged in the incident but there were no injuries. Police said the vehicle from which the metal box fell is yet to be identified, and warned that drivers who cause accidents by not properly securing loads can be fined up to NT$18,000 (US$562) and have their driver's license revoked.
