TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A large landslide in the mountains of Taoyuan occurred in the early morning on Sunday (Sept. 15), cutting off access to residents and tourists camping in the area.
The landslide occurred around 7:30 a.m. this morning in Taoyuan’s Fuxing District, causing the collapse of a mountain access road that serves the Hsuehwunao community, reported UDN. While no injuries have been reported, an estimated 300 people were stranded by the collapse of the access road.
Authorities believe an excessive amount of precipitation in recent days and changes to the landscape caused by the massive earthquake that struck Hualien in April contributed to the landslide and road collapse.
The Taoyuan government is coordinating an evacuation effort for those stranded in the mountains. The construction crew began to clear the debris by mid-day Sunday and will start rebuilding the access road in the days ahead.
As of publication, a temporary route to access the Hsuehwunao area is being opened.
