TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taipei 101 Chair Janet Chia's (賈永婕) security has been increased following an email death threat thought to have originated overseas, the Taipei City Police Department said Monday (Sept. 16).
Chia took to Facebook Tuesday (Sept. 17) to respond to the death threat, which included phrases like “chef’s knife scissors razor, kill Chia, justice will be served,” per CNA.
The incident was reported to the police on Friday (Sept. 13). Additional security measures have been implemented in response.
Chia said she accepted criticism but drew a line at threats against her life. She added that despite facing accusations of being a "beauty without brains" she has maintained her composure.
However, Chia said she drew the line at illegal actions. She expressed her faith in Taiwan's legal system to deliver justice.
Chia became chair of Taipei 101 on Sept. 3. When asked about her goals, she answered that she wanted to surpass the department store's strong performance in the previous year, per CNA.
Chia announced Aug. 22 that she would become the next chair of Taipei 101. The Ministry of Finance appointed her based on her expertise in fashion, marketing, and management, per Yahoo News.
Chia, born into a middle-class military family, holds a degree in media and communications from Coventry University in the United Kingdom. After graduating, she worked as a journalist before transitioning into the entertainment industry.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Chia raised NT$92 million (US$2.9 million) to purchase 342 High-Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC) systems, which are life-saving devices. Her efforts earned her the title of "pandemic goddess."
The case is being jointly investigated by Xinyi District’s Criminal Investigation Brigade and Taipei’s Criminal Investigation Division.
