TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwanese athlete Chou Po-wei (周柏崴) won the gold medal at the World Skate Games on Sunday (Sept. 15).
The 22-year-old competed in the Battle Slalom Senior Men category. Chou defeated China's Zhang Hao and Italy's Lorenzo Demuru to claim the gold medal, according to World Skate.
Thirty-one Taiwanese athletes were chosen to compete in the competition's freestyle skating events. Taiwan's overall performance included three gold medals, one silver medal, and one bronze medal, according to Liberty Times Sports.
The competition took place from Sept. 6-22, with events held in four regions across Italy, including cities like Rome, Abruzzo, Novara, and Rimini. More than 12,000 athletes from around the world participated, per Tourism Roma.
The World Skate Games 2024 is the largest international competition for roller sports, offering 600 events and 156 world titles. With 12 different sports included, it's a major event in the roller sports world.
Previous editions of this biennial event were held in China's Nanjing, Spain's Barcelona, and Argentina's Buenos Aires.
Taiwan President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) sent a congratulatory message praising Chou's exceptional performance. He urged the country's athletes to keep striving for the highest honors for themselves and the nation, per Sports Administration.
