TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Apple’s iPhone 16 went on sale Friday (Sept. 20) at major telecoms, including Chunghwa Telecom, FarEasTone, and Taiwan Mobile.
Chunghwa Telecom is hosting iPhone 16 launch events for the first time in northern, central, and southern Taiwan, per UDN. To alleviate the strain on fans queuing, they adopted an online registration system and announced that 180 fans could check in starting at 6 a.m. on Friday.
Despite reports of poor pre-orders internationally, Chunghwa Telecom Chair Kuo Shui-yi (郭水義) said he was optimistic, per CNA. He explained that the iPhone 16 will sell well in Taiwan because of the nation’s attitude toward embracing technology.
Kuo said he anticipates varying degrees of upgrades across models 12 to 15, “hoping to make it the largest iPhone upgrade wave since the launch of 5G.”
Regarding supply, Chunghwa Telecom noted concerns over demand for the Pro series exceeding supply. The company said it is currently in talks with Apple to address the issue.
Meanwhile, other telecoms opened their doors to eager fans. At FarEasTone’s Syntrend store, a family of four braved the rain to line up. The company said they arrived around 10 a.m. on Thursday (Sept. 19) and plan to get phones for the whole family.
