TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – A magnitude 5.3 earthquake struck east Taiwan at 6:51 p.m. on Saturday (Sept. 21), the Central Weather Administration (CWA) reported.
The quake’s epicenter was 29.4 kilometers north of Hualien County Hall, in the township of Xiulin, with a focal depth of 17 km.
The quake’s biggest intensity level reached level 4 in Taroko and Xibao in Hualien County, and level 3 in the cities of Hualien and Heping in the same county, and in parts of Yilan County, Nantou County, and Taichung. Taiwan uses an intensity scale of 1 to 7, which gauges the degree to which a quake is felt at a specific location.
Since a magnitude 7.2 quake hit Hualien County on April 3, more than 1,000 aftershocks have hit the region.
Saturday marked the 25th anniversary of the 921 earthquake, a magnitude 7.3 temblor which struck Nantou County and caused 2,400 deaths across the country.
