TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The 19th tropical depression of the year continues to make its way westward across Taiwan, bringing extremely heavy rain to Taipei and eastern, central, and southern areas until Monday (Sept. 23).
The Central Weather Administration (CWA) issued a warning about tropical depression (TD19) at 3:55 a.m. Sunday (Sept. 21). The warning said TD19 was located approximately 100 kilometers northwest of Taipei, traveling in a southwesterly direction at a speed of 21-25 km/ hour.
Though TD19 is beginning to weaken, CWA said lingering effects of the storm system and peripheral clouds could continue to bring heavy rain, per UDN.
According to the CWA, a tropical depression affected by a low-pressure system will lead to strong wind gusts at sea. Ships sailing in the area are advised to pay attention to safety.
Rain is expected to be heavier in northern, central, and southern areas and become heavier in the afternoon and evenings, per China Times.
The CWA said heavy rain is also expected in outlying islands such as Kinmen, Matsu, and Penghu. Furthermore, the likelihood of heavy rain could trigger landslides, falling rocks, and swollen streams in mountainous areas. Low-lying areas should also be mindful of rainfall accumulation and potential flooding.
High temperatures in various areas will be between 28 to 30 C, dropping slightly after nightfall, potentially reaching 24 to 26 C. Outdoor temperatures will feel cooler as the rain continues.
