TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A Taiwanese man who went missing after traveling to Shanghai in late August is being investigated for fraud, Chinese authorities said on Monday (Sept. 23).
The subject of the investigation is a Taiwan resident named Kuo Yu-hsuan (郭宇軒), China’s Taiwan Affairs Office said in a statement provided to UDN. The statement indicated that the case will be investigated according to local law.
Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council responded to the statement, expressing hope that the relevant departments of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) will provide a detailed explanation of the case as soon as possible. It also called on authorities to ensure that Kuo is granted the rights and protections he is entitled to.
Kuo’s disappearance was made public on Thursday (Sept. 19) after his family in Taiwan posted on social media, stating they could not contact him. The 22-year-old man’s sister said she feared he had been forced to work for a fraud ring.
Kuo confirmed his safe arrival in Shanghai to his family on Aug. 27, his sister said, after which he departed for Anhui and became unreachable. Aside from Monday’s statement from the Taiwan Affairs Office, no other details regarding the investigation into Kuo have been provided.
