TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Taiwan’s new ambassador in Haiti, Hu Cheng-hao (胡正浩), has taken up his posting in the strife-torn Caribbean ally, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) said Tuesday (Sept. 24).
Hu already served in the same post from 2017 to 2019, per CNA. Haiti is one of Taiwan’s 12 official diplomatic allies, but concern about the future of the 68-year-old relationship emerged amid continued unrest, with gang warfare tearing the country apart.
Hu arrived in the Haitian capital Port-au-Prince on Sept. 12, and presented his credentials to acting Foreign Minister Carlos Hercule the following day. On Sept. 19, he also visited the head of Haiti’s transitional government, Transitional Presidential Council Coordinator Edgard Leblanc Fils.
Both Hu and Leblanc expressed appreciation for bilateral ties and the aid provided by Taiwan to Haiti. Hu also met with Prime Minister Garry Conille and new Foreign Minister Dominique Dupuy.
Taiwan has contributed to the development of agriculture, healthcare, and basic infrastructure in Haiti. After 2022, Taiwan delivered more than 800 bulletproof vests for police and military, per Radio Taiwan International.
