TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwanese weightlifter Chen Hsin-ning (陳歆寧) won the silver medal in the women's 71 kg category clean and jerk at the World Junior Championships on Tuesday (Sept. 24), breaking both the national junior women's records in clean and jerk and total lift.
This year's championships runs from Sept. 19 to 27. Chen was defeated by Charlotte Simoneau of Canada, while Ecuador's Damary Samantha Nazareno Mina took third place, according to the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF).
Chen, 19, lifted 126 kg in the clean and jerk, failing to reach her goal of 128 kg. She had also set a goal of 95 kg in the snatch, per CNA.
Although Chen's snatch performance fell short of her goal of 88 kg, her 214 kg total lift placed seventh overall. This was also a new personal best for Chen.
Looking ahead to next year's competition, Chen expressed her desire to qualify for the national team again and win medals in all three lifts.
A former basketball player, Chen began weightlifting in middle school after impressing a coach with her strength. She fully committed to the sport in her third year of middle school.
