TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The India Taipei Association (ITA) unveiled a photo exhibition celebrating Mahatma Gandhi’s legacy in collaboration with Taichung’s Cultural Affairs Bureau on Tuesday (Sept. 24).
The exhibition, located in the Taichung Public Library, features a curated collection of photographs capturing pivotal moments in Gandhi’s life, tracing back to his early activist days to his influence on India's independence movement, according to ITA. It will run until Oct. 27.
During the opening ceremony, ITA Director General Manharshinh Yadav said that the exhibition not only honors Gandhi’s contributions to global peace and nonviolence but also serves as a reminder of the relevance of his teachings today. Gandhi’s message resonates strongly with Taiwan, a society that upholds democracy and human dignity, Yadav said.
ITA’s determination to bring this exhibition to Taiwan symbolizes the growing partnership between India and Taiwan, the director said. “This collaboration celebrates the shared values of peace, tolerance, and justice, which both cherish,” he said. The exhibition is a testament to the strong cultural and historical ties between Taiwan and India and serves as a platform for more people-to-people interactions and cooperation, he added.
Yadav encouraged Taiwanese to visit India to trace Gandhi's footsteps, including a visit to the Gandhi Ashram located in the city of Anandpur.
Gandhi, born on Oct. 2, 1869, in Porbandar, India, was a leader who advocated for nonviolent resistance against British colonial rule. His legacy continues to inspire movements for civil rights and freedom worldwide, emphasizing that true change comes through justice, tolerance, and nonviolence, ITA said.
