TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A US poll shows 53% of voters think former President Donald Trump would handle a Taiwan Strait Crisis effectively, while 47% feel Vice President Kamala Harris would.
According to the latest poll by the think tank Institute for Global Affairs, 52% of US voters believe Harris can better defend US international interests, while 48% think that Trump is better. However, 54% of voters in swing states believe that Trump can better defend America's international interests, compared to 46% for Harris.
In swing states, 58% of voters believe Trump is more likely to end the wars in Gaza and Ukraine, compared to 42% for Harris. Nationwide, 51% of voters believe Trump is more likely to end these wars, while Harris' figure is 49%.
Regarding a possible Chinese military invasion of Taiwan, 58% of swing state voters believe Trump is more likely to “respond effectively,” compared to 42% for Harris. Nationwide, 53% of voters think Trump would handle the situation more effectively, while 47% believe Harris would.
According to the poll, when it comes to defending Taiwan, the support levels among Democrats and Republicans are nearly identical, with 44% of Democrats and 45% of Republicans in favor.
However, compared to American adults planning to vote for Trump, those planning to vote for Harris are 18% more likely to believe the US should send troops to defend Taiwan.
The think tank said Trump's supporters are less hawkish about defending Taiwan militarily than the average Republican and Harris supporters.
The poll was distributed online by YouGov to a sample of 1,835 voting-age adults in the US between Aug. 15-22 with a margin of error of ±3.9%. This included 1,000 respondents from six swing states.
