TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Tropical Storm Jebi (燕子) may form east of Taiwan over the weekend bringing rain to the north for two to three days early next week.
A low-pressure system southeast of Taiwan is forecast to develop into a tropical depression over the weekend, and may even become Tropical Storm Jebi. Saturday and Sunday (Sept. 28-29) will be the most critical days to determine the strength and impact of the system, reported TyTech Taiwan.
The weather platform said the tropical system has already started to organize. Current models show it moving northward to the east of Taiwan from Monday to Wednesday (Oct. 1-3).
TyTech said the key point to observe is the lack of guiding airflow during the tropical storm's northward movement, which will slow its speed and prolong its impact.
There are significant uncertainties in its track. It could move northward over the eastern sea, pass near the coast, or even make landfall. A clearer picture will emerge in one or two days.
TyTech also pointed out that the system's wind field and circulation are at least medium in size, with the potential to reach a moderate tropical storm strength. As it approaches Taiwan, the northeast monsoon will strengthen simultaneously, intensifying rainfall in the north, Yilan, and northern Hualien.
Heavy rain is likely for two to three consecutive days early next week, and central and southern areas will also feel significant effects, mainly in terms of wind.
TyTech urged everyone to prepare, as strong winds and heavy rain are unavoidable. It’s recommended that people use these few days to make necessary preparations for the tropical storm.
