TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A trade delegation representing the US State of Nebraska arrived in Taiwan on Monday (Sept. 23), led by Secretary of State of Nebraska Bob Evnan.
The 10-person delegation included Deputy Secretary of State of Nebraska Cindi Allen and representatives from the state’s agricultural, manufacturing, and medtech industries. Bob Evnan told Taiwan News that, as secretary of state, he hopes his presence in Taiwan will highlight rapidly developing economic ties and US support for Taiwan.
Nebraska, with its large agricultural export industry of wheat, corn, and beef, has lots to share with Taiwan. Evnan said he sees room for cooperation with Taiwan in the future.
While Nebraska does not currently maintain a trade office in Taiwan, Evnan expressed optimism that establishing one may be possible.
Beyond agriculture, Nebraska is eager to build bridges and foster cooperation with Taiwan in the educational sector, including in areas of collaborative research and student exchanges.
When asked about current relations between Taiwan and the US, Evnan expressed optimism, noting that since 2022, there have been significant developments in economic and cultural exchanges. The visits of former US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, followed by former US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in 2022 marked a turning point for improving ties, said Evnan.
Speaking with Taiwan News, Evnan also praised the efforts of Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), which he said has done a great job of building good relations with individual US states in recent years.
When asked about regional politics and the upcoming US election, Evnan said that regardless of presidential politics, people in the US, no matter their political affiliation, overwhelmingly support Taiwan. He added that he looks forward to strengthening bilateral ties and welcomes a Taiwanese delegation to Nebraska.
