TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Tigerair flight IT322 from Macao landed at Kaohsiung’s International Airport at noon on Sunday (Sept. 29), though a landing gear malfunction left the plane stuck on the runway.
The plane's nose wheel malfunctioned, making it impossible to turn or arrive at the gate without assistance. The stuck airplane caused the runway to be shut down for 90 minutes, beginning at 12:40 p.m.
The runway closure led to the diversion of the following flights to alternate airports: Daily Air 7010, Cathay Pacific 424, Daily Air 651, and China Airlines 586. Thirteen flights were affected before airport operations returned to normal at 2 p.m., per PTS.
Hong Jian-nan (洪建男), deputy director of Kaohsiung International Airport, said, "Tigerair Flight 322 was unable to turn due to a nose wheel failure, and the runway was suspended for takeoff and landing, affecting the arrival and departure of 13 international flights affecting 2,315 passengers."
The plane was eventually towed to the gate.
Tigerair had other problems on Sunday as flight IT236 from Taoyuan to Hakodate departed at 7 a.m. An electronic signal abnormality caused the flight to return to Taoyuan Airport shortly after takeoff, per CNA.
A backup aircraft was dispatched for the 175 passengers aboard the flight, while emergency maintenance work was carried out on the affected aircraft.
The Tigerair flight eventually re-boarded at 11:10 a.m., took off at 12:17, and landed at about 4:23 p.m. It was delayed by nearly five hours.
