TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A video on Monday (Sept. 30) showed a landslide brought on by heavy rains from Typhoon Krathon blocking the entrance to a tunnel in Hualien County.
Krathon is slowly approaching Taiwan from the southeast, and the threat of wind and rain is gradually increasing in various areas. Due to heavy rainfall, a large landslide occurred at around 6:55 a.m. on Monday outside the entrance to Huide Tunnel on Suhua Highway in Hualien County's Xiulin Township, per ETtoday.
The fallen debris blocked the tunnel entrance, temporarily stranding eight vehicles and 14 people inside. However, no injuries were reported, and the Hualien County Government said all vehicles and individuals were successfully rescued.
Footage was released 30 minutes later on a Facebook page for information about Suhua Highway. A massive amount of debris can be seen pouring down from above the tunnel entrance, blocking the road ahead.
The loud crashing sounds of falling rocks echoed continuously inside the tunnel, while dust filled the air, obstructing visibility. The falling debris raised some concerns that the tunnel might collapse.
