TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — South Korean representative Lee Eun-ho lauded bilateral ties with Taiwan at a Korean National Day celebration on Monday (Sept. 30).
Lee said South Korea and Taiwan have overcome numerous challenges and achieved democracy and economic prosperity despite being small nations with limited natural resources. “Throughout these journeys, we have complemented and supported each other,” he said.
Lee pointed out the double taxation avoidance arrangement came into effect this year, significantly boosting business and investment growth. He said trade volume between the two nations has grown substantially, adding he felt “optimistic that we will reach the highest level in our history.”
In terms of tech cooperation, semiconductors account for more than half of Korea’s exports to Taiwan and around 70% of Taiwan’s exports to South Korea, Lee said. AI chips are manufactured in Taiwan, while South Korea supplies the crucial HBM memory inside these chips. “This cooperation is a testament to our mutual strengths,” he said.
Taiwan’s support during the floods in South Korea last summer was deeply appreciated, Lee said. When the 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck Taiwan in April, South Korea offered its condolences and was ready to assist. He praised the Taiwanese for being calm and resilient in the face of tragedy and said their preparedness deserved “the highest respect.”
The representative believed the two countries should continue deepening bilateral cooperation, especially in cybersecurity and supply resilience. “By creating more success stories, we can serve as positive role models and inspire others,” he said.
Korean National Day (Oct. 3), also known as National Foundation Day, marks the establishment of the first Korean state of Gojoseon in 2333 BC.
