TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Taipei Maokong Gondola suspended operations on Tuesday (Oct. 1) due to high winds brought by the outer circulation of Typhoon Krathon.
The Taipei Metro announced that as of 9 a.m. Tuesday, the Maokong Gondola has suspended operations. Notices have been posted on the Maokong Gondola website and at all MRT stations.
The suspension comes as wind gusts in the area exceeded 75 kph. The resumption of gondola services will depend on wind conditions and safety tests.
According to the criteria for the Maokong Gondola, operations will be halted if wind speeds reach 57 kph (about 7 on the Beaufort scale) and persist for more than 3 seconds, or if gusts exceed 64 kph (about 8 on the Beaufort scale). Operations will also be suspended in the event of lightning strikes along the route or an earthquake of 4 or higher magnitude.
If a land typhoon warning is issued with the alert covering the Taipei area, operations will be suspended depending on weather conditions or if the Taipei City Government announces a suspension of work or school.
Those holding tickets may get a full refund within seven days of the incident at any gondola station. For EasyCard users, ticket gates will automatically adjust data in the cards if the passenger uses the card on the gondola system within three days of the incident.
After three days, passengers may bring the EasyCard to the information counter of any gondola or metro station to revise ticket data.
