TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Central Weather Administration (CWA) extended its land warning for Typhoon Krathon to include Changhua and Nantou on Tuesday (Oct. 1) at 7:15 p.m.
According to a CWA report, the typhoon is approximately 180 km south of Kaohsiung and is heading north-northwest at 6-11 kilometers per hour. Max sustained winds near the center are at 55 meters per second.
CWA forecaster Lin Ping-yu (林秉煜) said the land warning area now includes Changhua and Nantou and reminded residents in Hualien, Taitung, and Penghu to take precautions, per CNA. The sea warning area still includes the Taiwan Strait, the eastern sea areas of Taiwan, the Bashi Channel, and the sea area around Dongsha Island.
Lin explained due to the influence of dry air from the north, Krathon has a chance to weaken into a moderate typhoon within the next 24 hours. It is expected to make landfall in southwest Taiwan at the upper limit of a moderate typhoon's strength after tomorrow evening.
Attention should be paid to Krathon's potentially slow movement on Wednesday (Oct. 2), Lin added. Rainfall will gradually increase in the south during the day.
As Krathon approaches, wind speeds will gradually increase across Taiwan from early tomorrow morning, especially in Pingtung, the Hengchun Peninsula, Penghu, Lanyu, and Green Island, which will experience strong gusts over level 12. Coastal areas in southwest Taiwan should be on guard against storm surges and seawater intrusion.
