TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Slow-moving Krathon has been downgraded to a moderate typhoon by the Central Weather Administration (CWA) and is not expected to make landfall until Thursday (Oct. 3), according to meteorologist Lin Te-en (林得恩).
Lin said Krathon's projected path has shifted westward and is expected to move up along the western side of the Central Mountain Range, making landfall near Tainan Thursday morning. Lin said the country could see work and classes canceled for another day due to the typhoon's speed and path.
The CWA said Krathon may dissipate over Taiwan between Friday morning and Saturday, possibly weakening into a tropical depression.
On Wednesday, heavy rain is expected around most of the country. Meanwhile, Hualien County, Taitung County, Pingtung County, and central and southern mountainous regions have a higher chance of torrential rain.
Open coastal areas south of Taichung, outlying islands, and Taitung's coast will see strong winds Wednesday, while large waves are expected around all coastal areas and offshore islands. Wave heights along the southwestern coast could reach eight to 10 meters.
Coastal areas in the southwest should be on high alert for storm surges and seawater intrusion and the public is advised to avoid any seaside activities.
