TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – As Typhoon Krathon nears Taiwan, 46 people have reported injuries and one person is missing as of 8 a.m. on Wednesday (Oct. 2), per the National Fire Agency.
The highest number of people injured, 23, is in Taitung, according to the county's typhoon response center. Six people were wounded in Taoyuan and five in New Taipei.
Three people were hospitalized, including a truck driver whose vehicle hit a large rock on South Link Highway in Taitung’s Taimali Township on Monday night. The truck driver is in the intensive care unit at Mackay Memorial Hospital, while the others are at an emergency health clinic in Orchid Island.
The missing person is suspected of falling into the sea at Dream Beach in Yunlin’s Taixi Township. The person’s identity remains unknown.
No deaths have been reported as of Wednesday morning.
There have been 247 reports of infrastructure and road tree collapses across Taiwan. Meanwhile, 2,735 people have been evacuated from cities and counties as a precaution in preparation for the typhoon.
Typhoon Krathon is currently located southwest of Kaohsiung, per the Central Weather Administration. While its outer bands have already reached south Taiwan, the storm is expected to gradually weaken.
