TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Taiwan reported one dead, two missing, and 70 injured as Typhoon Krathon approached the country from the south Wednesday (Oct. 2).
The fatality was a man in his 70s who had been trimming trees at his home in the Hualien County township of Shoufeng, according to the Central Emergency Operation Center. He fell from a height of 3 meters and was pronounced dead after transfer to a hospital, Radio Taiwan International reported.
Another individual visited a beach in Taixi, Yunlin County, but was swept away by waves. Because of the strong wind and rough seas, rescue efforts were suspended.
An eyewitness in Xiulin, Hualien County, told the authorities he saw an individual being swept off a bridge. The rescue services sent a drone, nine cars, and two rubber boats to the site, while 16 people walked along the river to find the missing person.
There were reports of falling rocks and collapsing trees throughout the country, but most of those incidents did not result in any serious injuries.
The power supply to an estimated 3,500 households is likely to be restored by the end of Wednesday, the Central Emergency Operation Center said. While waves had breached a dike in Fangliao, Pingtung County, over a length of 30 meters, repair work had started, with the problem expected to be solved by 10 a.m. Thursday (Oct. 3), according to officials.
