TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – The Central Emergency Operation Center (CEOC) said 123 people have been injured, two died, and two are missing as of 8:30 a.m. Thursday morning (Oct. 3) due to Typhoon Krathon.
On Thursday morning, Interior Minister Liu Shyh-fang (劉世芳) led the CEOC's 13th Krathon briefing. Liu said the first typhoon death was a man in his 70s in Hualien’s Shoufeng Township, who fell three meters while trimming a tree outside his home.
The second death was a truck driver whose vehicle hit a large rock on Provincial Highway 9 in Taitung’s Taimali Township on Monday. He was sent to the hospital and pronounced dead on Wednesday.
The first missing person was suspected of falling into the sea in Yunlin’s Taixi Township on Tuesday. The individual is believed to be a migrant worker, and the county has suspended search and rescue efforts due to dangerous waves.
The second missing person was taken by a current near Shuiyuan Bridge in Hualien's Xiulin Township on Wednesday. Witnesses reported the incident to the local fire department, which sent a team to search for the individual.
By Thursday morning, there had been 1,036 reports of infrastructure and road tree collapses across Taiwan, concentrated in Kaohsiung. Seven landslides have occurred, including four in Keelung, two in Pingtung, and one in Taitung, but no injuries have been reported.
Meanwhile, 9,967 people have been evacuated from 13 cities and counties as a precautionary measure, and 120 shelters have been opened, according to the CEOC.
Typhoon Krathon is forecasted to make landfall in Kaohsiung around 1 p.m. on Thursday, per the Central Weather Administration. Its structure is expected to weaken due to the Central Mountain Range after making landfall.
