TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Legislator Huang Jie (黃捷) was named as one of the 100 most influential leaders of the future by Time Magazine Thursday (Oct. 3).
In the introduction, Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim (蕭美琴) describes Huang as Taiwan’s youngest lawmaker, just 31 years old. She also names Huang as a symbol of political participation by young people, and as evidence that democracy has become part of daily life in Taiwan.
As a member of the LGBTQ community, the lawmaker spoke out on behalf of underrepresented groups, the vice president said. Huang also worked on issues including human rights, transportation infrastructure, and parliamentary diplomacy.
In a response to her listing by Time, Huang said she would continue her efforts on behalf of Taiwan’s democracy in the face of pressure from authoritarianism, the Liberty Times reported.
She featured on the list of leaders along with Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, Ecuador President Daniel Noboa, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, and Lara Trump, daughter-in-law of former US President Donald Trump.
