TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A landslide occurred Thursday (Oct. 3) night near Keelung’s Tianwaitian incinerator cleaning building, burying 12 government vehicles, including garbage trucks and water tankers.
No injuries were reported. Heavy rain brought by Typhoon Kathron triggered the landslide, per CNA.
Employees who worked in the building were asked to work remotely, the Environmental Protection Bureau said. A professional assessment of the building’s safety was requested.
Efforts are underway to mobilize additional garbage trucks to ensure uninterrupted waste collection services.
Keelung was battered by Typhoon Krathon's outer rainbands, setting a new daily rainfall record of 373 mm Thursday evening.
Ren 2nd Road, Ren 4th Road, and Xiangfeng St. were among the areas affected by mudslides and flooding. Other locations impacted included Lane 3 Maijin Road, Sankeng Station, and the intersection of Yi 1st Road and Xin 5th Road.
The intersection of Dongxin Road and Dongguang Road was also submerged in floodwaters. A video captured a rider and their scooter floating in the flood, while another person attempted a rescue.
