TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) in Myanmar presented a US$100,000 (NT$3.2 million) check to Myanmar's Red Cross Society for disaster relief and reconstruction after Typhoon Yagi.
On Taiwan's National Day, the TECO representative in Myanmar Chou Chung-hsing (周中興) hosted a reception on Friday (Oct. 5). In addition to Myanmar, Chou said Taiwan has earmarked donations for Vietnam and Thailand, which have also experienced devastation due to Typhoon Yagi.
Chou said Taiwan upholds its international responsibility to support the vulnerable, while pursuing values such as freedom and democracy, per CNA. Chou said Taiwan regularly offers international assistance in agriculture, public health, medical services, and education.
In the past two years, Taiwan's public and private medical institutions have cooperated with Myanmar, undertaking initiatives such as personnel training, equipment donation, technology transfer, and experience sharing.
With Myanmar suffering its worst flooding in decades, causing serious damage to property, agricultural fields, and finance, Chou said it was important for the international community to help.
President of Myanmar's Red Cross Society Myo Nyunt received the donation. He said the funds will help with reconstruction and build long-term infrastructure for future disasters.
