TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — An investigation is underway into reports that a man sought by Italian police is in Taiwan, the Criminal Investigation Bureau and the Immigration Agency confirmed on Friday (Oct. 11).
Both departments said they have not received any information from Italian law enforcement agencies regarding the case, and are working to clarify the facts, per CNA. The statements came after Italian prosecutors said they believed Spanish man Salvador Alejandro Llinas Onate was in Taipei, which local media reported, per Italian outlets.
Llinas Onate is suspected of perpetrating a fraud involving NT$1.05 billion (30 million euros). He is accused of hiring over 1,100 cars from rental companies and selling them, according to an Italian report.
The report said the fraudulent activity is alleged to have begun in 2019. Llinas Onate is described as being 47 years old and originally from the Spanish city of Palma.
