TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Navy plans to establish a missile maintenance center by July 2026 to enhance logistical maintenance capabilities.
The center will focus on maintenance of Taiwan’s Hsiung Feng anti-ship missiles and US-made Harpoon anti-ship missiles, CNA reported. Taiwan has purchased 100 coastal defense systems from the US and is mass-producing approximately 400 Hsiung Feng II and III missiles each year to bolster its defense.
Altogether, it will amass more than 1,000 in a few years, prompting the urgent need for a facility to store the weapons.
The Navy’s existing combat system facility is a specialized unit responsible for maintaining various combat weapon systems, weapon precision, ship docking, weapon systems enhancement, and domestic shipbuilding projects.
The Navy has outlined plans for the creation of a Coastal Combat Command to boost maritime combat capabilities. It will incorporate units including the Haifeng Brigade, Fast Attack Boat Combat Group, and Naval Maritime Surveillance and Reconnaissance Command. Construction is expected to be completed by January 2026.
Plans are underway to establish additional Haifeng Brigade bases in Yunlin, Tainan, Zuoying, Pingtung, and Taitung. Brigades are equipped with Hsiung Feng II and III missiles, and will eventually be armed with Harpoon missiles. Their presence gives the Navy better command of the sea in the Taiwan Strait.
