TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC) on Monday (Oct. 14) said no passenger flights have been canceled due to the military exercises China has launched around Taiwan.
The PLA Eastern Theater Command announced on Monday (Oct. 14) that its army, navy, air force, and rocket forces were conducting the "Joint Sword-2024B" exercise in the Taiwan Strait and areas north, south, and east of Taiwan. Transport Minister Chen Shih-kai (陳世凱) on Monday said he has directed the Civil Aeronautics Administration (CAA) and the Maritime and Port Bureau (MPB) to monitor operations in the sea and airspace and urged cooperation among agencies to ensure navigation safety.
MOTC said flights at airports and vessel operations at ports are normal. The ministry said CAA's air traffic control unit will continue to monitor aircraft and provide air traffic control services to ensure the safety of flight operations in the Taipei Flight Information Region.
In addition, the ministry said the MPB is strengthening broadcasts through the Taiwan Maritime Affairs Center and coastal radio stations to alert surrounding vessels. It is also monitoring the movements of Chinese ships in coordination with the Coast Guard Administration and the military.
The MOTC has instructed the CAA and the MPB to remain vigilant and provide real-time updates to ensure the safety of citizens and smooth transportation.
