TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A container gantry crane collapsed at Keelung Port’s Pier 20 around 2 p.m. on Monday (Oct. 14).
The incident occurred when the Yuzhou Qi Hang (鈺洲啟航輪) barge carrier was transporting a newly purchased gantry crane for the China Container Terminal Corporation. As the barge docked at Pier 20, the new crane accidentally collided with an existing onshore crane, causing the latter to collapse.
Fortunately, no one was injured in the accident, and only one container sustained damage. The details surrounding the collapse are under investigation, according to ET today.
Song I-ching (宋益進), deputy director of the port, explained that the barge was carrying the new gantry crane to replace an older one, adding that the cause of the collision remains unclear.
Damage assessments and compensation discussions will follow, with professionals determining liability, Song explained. China Container Terminal Corporation and the freight company are expected to engage in further talks regarding the incident.
A new container gantry crane costs around NT$300 million (US$9.3 million).
The Keelung Port Branch of the International Ports Corporation stated that the incident had affected container shipping operations at Piers 20 and 21. These piers had been reserved for transporting the new container gantry crane from Oct. 14-18.
