TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Former Taipei Mayor Ko Wen-je (柯文哲) submitted to a fifth round of questioning from prosecutors on Wednesday (Oct. 16) after refusing to do so two weeks earlier.
Prosecutors planned to question Ko regarding the Core Pacific City corruption scandal on Oct. 1, but the former Taiwan People’s Party chair refused. The appointment was postponed, and Ko arrived at the offices of Taipei prosecutors for questioning at around 9 a.m. on Wednesday, per CNA.
No further information on Ko’s physical or mental condition was provided.
Ko was detained on Sept. 5 by a judge who ruled there was sufficient evidence to suspect he was involved in a corruption scheme. The scheme allegedly saw millions flow from developer Core Pacific City to Taipei City Council members during Ko’s mayoralty.
The focus of the corruption investigation relates to identifying which individuals were responsible for making decisions in the case. Prosecutors are investigating the finances of Ko, his family, Core Pacific City Chair Sheen Ching-jing (沈慶京), Kuomintang Taipei City Councillor Angela Ying (應曉薇), and others.
Former Taipei Deputy Mayor Pong Cheng-sheng (彭振聲) has also been questioned about the case, alongside former city officials, those who donated to Ko when he was mayor and others.
