TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Chunghwa Post, Taiwan's national postal service, is accelerating its electric transition as part of its commitment to environmental sustainability and aims to increase the proportion of electric scooters in its logistics fleet to 50% by 2029.
According to the latest business report submitted to the Legislative Yuan by the Ministry of Transportation, Chunghwa Post has been introducing electric scooters since 2017. Gas-powered scooters have been gradually replaced to establish a green logistics fleet, per CNA.
As of July, 3,241 electric scooters are being used, representing 41% of the company's two-wheeler fleet.
Chunghwa Post's analysis indicates that each gasoline-powered postal vehicle emits approximately 1.34 metric tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) annually. By transitioning to electric scooters the company can significantly reduce its carbon footprint, saving an estimated 4,342.94 metric tons a year.
This reduction is equivalent to the CO2 absorbed by 11.25 Daan Forest Parks a year. Each hectare of forest can absorb 15 metric tons of CO2 annually, according to Ministry of Environment News.
To align with the government's electric vehicle industry development policy, Chunghwa Post plans to replace 500 more gas-powered scooters with electric ones in 2024. It plans to have a fully electric fleet by 2039.
