TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Baseball manager Lee Lai-fa (李來發) passed away on Wednesday (Oct. 16) at the age of 68.
Lee had a rich coaching career, leading Team Taiwan at many international competitions, per CNA. His most notable achievement was guiding Taiwan to a silver medal at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics.
Lee coached the Chinatrust Whales in Taiwan’s Chinese Professional Baseball League (CPBL) for six seasons. He managed 571 games with a record of 281 wins, 274 losses, and 16 ties.
After leaving professional baseball, Lee became the head coach at Kao-Yuan Vocational High School of Technology and Commerce in 2009. In 2024, he stepped down from his role and became senior advisor to the team.
In his earlier career, Lee joined Japan’s Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks as a trainee in 1980, per Liberty Times. In 1982, he made his first appearance in the first team, playing in 25 games over two years and achieving 16 hits, including three home runs and 9 runs batted in (RBIs).
