TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Visitors to hotels in Taiwan are advised to bring their own toiletries as a new regulation restricting single-use items will take effect in 2025.
A recent incident on social media highlighted the issue when a resident expressed frustration after paying NT$100 (US$3.12) for disposable slippers at a hotel in Kenting. The guest questioned the need for additional charges at a hotel that costs over NT$6,000 per night.
The hotel defended its decision, saying that it clearly indicated on its website that single-use toiletries would no longer be provided, per SETN.
In response to the concern, the Ministry of Environment's Resource Circulation Administration issued a press release reminding travelers to prepare their own kits when staying in hotels.
Starting Jan. 1, 2025, accommodation businesses will be prohibited from offering liquid wash and lotion in sizes less than 180 ml. Under the Waste Disposal Act (廢棄物清理法), the display of free, one-time-use personal hygiene products in rooms will also be banned.
Guests will only have access to these items at the hotel counter, either for free or at a cost. Restricted items include shampoo, body wash, lotion, conditioner, toothbrushes, toothpaste, razors, shaving foam, combs, and shower caps.
Lodging businesses are encouraged to communicate these regulations to their customers. This initiative aims to reduce waste at the source and aligns with global efforts to minimize plastic use and promote sustainable tourism.
