TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — AI-powered law enforcement technology is being used on National Highway 1 near Taoyuan to identify road users not wearing seatbelts.
The National Highway Police Bureau stated on Tuesday (Oct. 22) that cameras using AI detection software have been installed on the Hukou section of the highway in response to increased traffic fatalities, per CNA. Police said the technology will automatically photograph drivers and passengers and use AI to identify those not wearing seatbelts.
The bureau said that between January and September, 16 people who were not wearing seatbelts died on the road section. The figure is six times more than the same period in 2023, representing over 27% of all fatalities on the road.
Police said that existing law enforcement measures will be strengthened alongside AI. The AI system could be rolled out to the entire highway network depending on its efficacy in the Hukou section.
