TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A new tropical storm formed in the Western Pacific on Friday (Oct. 25), but its impact on Taiwan is uncertain.
The Central Weather Administration (CWA) said a tropical depression near Guam developed into Tropical Storm Kong-rey (康芮), becoming the 21st tropical storm of the year. It is moving in a west-northwesterly direction.
The CWA said Kong-rey will take several days to approach and its path is still uncertain. Current data shows a higher chance of it turning north. There is also a small chance it may continue westward across the Philippines, according to the CWA.
The CWA posted a map showing three potential paths that Kong-rey could take next week and added more observations were needed.
Meanwhile, due to the effects of Tropical Storm Trami near the Philippines and the northeast monsoon, the CWA issued an extremely heavy rain advisory for Keelung, Taipei, New Taipei, and Yilan County on Friday. It released a heavy rain alert for Pingtung County, Hualien County, and Taitung County.
