TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Taiwanese musical "Don’t Cry, Dancing Girls" (勸世三姊妹) will be performed in Mandarin Chinese at a limited New York City opening on Jan. 23, 24, and 25.
A big hit in Taiwan last year, it will show at Theatre Row on 42nd Street at a special invitation event intended to pique the interest of industry professionals, cultural officials, and impresarios.
"Don’t Cry, Dancing Girls" is a groundbreaking work that looks at family, ritual, and tradition, according to Taiwan Creative Content Agency. The subject matter is a family’s return to its rural roots after the death of the patriarch, and the narrative combines Daoist and Buddhist rituals with modern musical theater.
The musical's creative team is led by award-winning Taiwanese writer Jie Zhan (詹傑). The work was featured at the Cannes Film Festival and Taiwan Canadian Film Festival.
