TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A delegation of European Union parliamentarians arrived in Taiwan on Sunday (Oct. 27) for a six-day visit.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) welcomed the lawmakers upon arrival and expressed gratitude for making the trip. The group will be in Taiwan until Friday (Nov. 1) and meet with Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim (蕭美琴), according to a MOFA press release.
The group is led by Michale Gahler of Germany, who is the leader of the Taiwan Friendship Group in the European Parliament. The delegation also includes Ondrej Kolar of the Czech Republic, Bernard Guetta of France, and Markus Poesentrup of Germany.
In addition to meeting the vice president, the lawmakers will meet with officials from MOFA and other government agencies to discuss Taiwan’s current economic and political situation and trade relations with the EU and regional concerns.
The visit comes just after the European Parliament voted to support Taiwan by denouncing China’s willful misrepresentation of UN Resolution 2758. This delegation of EU lawmakers is also the first to visit Taiwan since recent parliamentary elections in Europe, held in June.
MOFA expressed gratitude to the lawmakers for supporting for Taiwan and pledged to continue strengthening partnerships between Taiwan and European countries.
