TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — An outdoor elevator connected to a pedestrian bridge and walkway malfunctioned on Sunday (Oct. 27) afternoon in New Taipei’s Banqiao District.
The elevator is outside the Fuzhong MRT station on the blue Bannan Line and had seen increased use because of a local Halloween event. A 55-year-old woman and her 8-year-old nephew were inside the elevator when it fell from the second level to the ground level, reported CNA.
The woman and child were temporarily trapped in the damaged elevator. After first responders freed them, they were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment with non-life-threatening injuries.
In response to the accident, the Banqiao District Office issued an apology. Officials will express their condolences to the woman and child in person, and the district office pledged to investigate how the accident occurred.
The city will consult with the manufacturer to fix any problems to prevent similar accidents in the future. UDN reported that the elevator is regularly inspected twice a month and that the last inspection was only 10 days ago.
